The Annual Tax Conference

"... but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."
- Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to Jean-Baptiste Le Roy, 1789

With the passage of time, mankind has evolved, along with it much has changed, invented and digitized, including all sorts of taxes. From the bathing tax to Peter I's beard tax, from the shadow tax applied in Venice in 1993 to the sun tax still applied today in Spain, people have always been charged for almost everything.

We invite you to travel through time, to different places and civilizations, to discover something about ancient taxes and together, to debate about the taxes in 2023.

In the times when people could not be easily identified, it was quite difficult to track who did not pay and what properties each owned. Moreover, if a nobleman did not like you, he could always tell the authorities that you owned more property than you actually have and you were forced to pay for what you actually did not have.
